Toronto Chiropractic Nutrition: Gut, Bone, Chondroitin Sulfate

July 07, 2021

Osteoporosis and the gut. Two seemingly unconnected conditions may actually be connected beyond the fact that they both are internal body issues. Osteoporosis’ effect is often seen in bone health deterioration. Gut issues’ effect is often seen in problems with digestion. Researchers now are discovering ties between gut health and osteoporosis’ effect on bone health. Yorkville Chiropractic and Wellness Centre helps Toronto chiropractic patients suffering with both issues!

OSTEOPOROSIS AND THE GUT HEALTH CONNECTION

Toronto osteoporosis is very common. Gut issues are, too. Gut health change via the use of probiotics has grown to be more mainstream recently to help chronic diseases like autoimmune and cardiovascular diseases as well as diabetes and cancer. Today, researchers are looking at the health of the gut microbiome to deal with bone mass regulation which influences osteoporosis and osteopenia. (1) Senile osteoporosis is associated with a reduced bone mineral density (BMD) and altered microbiota. How these are associated in postmenopausal osteoporosis is not yet known. A study that attempted to sort this out did discover that there was decreased bacterial richness and diversity in postmenopausal osteoporosis with significant contrast in levels of phyla and genera in gut microbiota. (2) Yorkville Chiropractic and Wellness Centre finds these new discoveries connecting gut health and osteoporosis helpful in guiding Toronto osteoporosis treatment planning.

DIETARY HELP FOR OSTEOPOROSIS

Toronto chiropractic care of osteoporosis is complex including spinal manipulation via the gentle Cox® Technic protocols, exercise, and nutrition. Looking at osteoporosis as a condition likely encompassing the microbiota of the gut, researchers are now trying dietary approaches to address osteoporosis. Nutritionally, a chondroitin sulfate/calcium complex enhanced the BMD and microstructure of the osteoporotic femur bone in a rat study. It also modified levels of the serum bone markers. This dietary intervention of chondroitin and calcium holds promise to potentially ease osteoporosis and related symptoms. (3) Yorkville Chiropractic and Wellness Centre is well versed in the effects of chondroitin sulfate for disc health and is enthused it may also be beneficial for osteoporosis.
