Toronto Chiropractic Care of Headache and Tips for Headache and Migraine Prevention
Headaches and migraines are never welcome. Headache sufferers are typically very ready for tips on how to avoid them. Migraine (a primary headache) sufferers over the age of 50 find themselves part of a global community with migraine being a leading cause of disability. (1) Yorkville Chiropractic and Wellness Centre has some prevention tips and treatment relief ideas especially for our Toronto headache and migraine sufferers.
DIET AND WEIGHT
A healthy diet nourishes the body and the mind. Researchers have discussed that migraine triggers appear in a variety of forms - environmental, hormonal, and dietary. A high-quality diet effectively helps manage migraine. Additionally, and more expressly, women with chronic migraine ate a poorer quality diet than that of women who had episodic migraine. (2) A new study was even more specific with the type of diet helpful to migraine patients, specifically those who are overweight. A very low-calorie ketogenic diet was found to be episodic-migraine preventative. Effectiveness was noted within one month of the diet change. (3) Yorkville Chiropractic and Wellness Centre is not suggesting that any of our patients try a certain type of diet now! If a Toronto headache sufferer wishes to explore a new diet, Yorkville Chiropractic and Wellness Centre is here to talk and decide which diet (if any special one) is proper.
NUTRITION: Vitamin D
In much the same way, vitamin D supplementation is presented. Vitamin D deficiency has been found in 45% to 100% of migraine sufferers. The anti-inflammatory and antioxidant qualities of vitamin D have initiated a look at including it in the care and prevention of headache and migraine. One study reported that trial doses of 1000-4000 IU per day reduced the frequency of migraine in addition to routine drug therapy. More analysis needs to be done, but vitamin D supplementation appears promising. (1) Yorkville Chiropractic and Wellness Centre studies the nutrition of each individual Toronto chiropractic patient and recommends supplementation when applicable.
CHIROPRACTIC AND INTEGRATIVE CARE
Headaches of all sorts – primary headaches like migraine and tension-type headache – are common complaints brought to the Toronto chiropractor. Research reported that complementary and integrative medicine - nutrition, movement (yoga), manual therapy, traditional Chinese medicine, acupuncture, massage, biofeedback, meditation, and mind-body strategies – was helpful. More specifically, spinal manipulation, chiropractic care, some supplements, diet change and hydrotherapy are reported helpful for migraine headache. (4)
