Both Easy and Beneficial to Raise Vitamin D Levels
It’s a world-wide epidemic: vitamin D deficiency. 14% of the world population has poor vitamin D levels. (1) One published report states that it affects 1 billion of us worldwide. (2) Low vitamin D status is linked to a varied range of diseases. Raising vitamin D levels is beneficial and easy…if vitamin D supplementation is followed. Yorkville Chiropractic and Wellness Centre encourages our Toronto chiropractic patients to check and work to raise as necessary their vitamin D levels. Yorkville Chiropractic and Wellness Centre is certain that positive health benefits will follow from this effort.
DISEASES LINKED TO LOW VITAMIN D LEVELS
A rampant vitamin D deficiency is associated with many diseases. The incidence of cancers like breast, colorectal, kidney, lung, and pancreatic is related to low vitamin D levels. Diabetes, rickets, rheumatic arthritis, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer diseases, benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, osteomalacia, osteoporosis, and fractures in adults are too. (1, 2, 3) Vitamin D participates importantly in calcium homeostasis, skeletal metabolism, and the function of immune, cardiovascular and reproductive systems. (2) Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo is also research-related to vitamin D status and bone mineral density. (3) It responds well to vitamin D3 supplementation. Testing for the occurrence of osteopenia/osteoporosis in these patients is the test as to the effectiveness of the treatment. (4) Yorkville Chiropractic and Wellness Centre notes that this is interesting as these two conditions are also known to be affected by vitamin D status too. Toronto chiropractic care at Yorkville Chiropractic and Wellness Centre benefits Toronto chiropractic patients with these conditions.
BENEFITS OF RAISING VITAMIN D LEVELS
Supplementing those who take antidepressants with vitamin D is shown to improve the antidepressive effect. Researchers propose that vitamin D may be beneficial for other such conditions beyond just depression like schizophrenia, cognitive disturbances, attention deficit disorder, and autism. (1) Giving a daily level dose of vitamin D (1000 units/kg I.P.) to post-surgical back patients on day one through day 21 lessens symptoms of neuropathic pain. (5) Yorkville Chiropractic and Wellness Centre acknowledges how these benefits are worth the work our Toronto chiropractic patients would undertake to raise low vitamin D levels.
HOW TO RAISE VITAMIN D LEVELS
A study of healthy young women revealed that consuming calcium plus vitamin D (1500 IU) by those with less than 20ng/L or 800 IU of vitamin D by patients with levels of more than 20 ng/L. Both witnessed their vitamin D levels increase. The rise was witnessed as early as the first month of the study for those taking calcium plus vitamin D. An interesting side observation in this study: It’s hard to get people to do what is suggested! Only 67 of the 106 study participants took the recommended supplements for the 3 months of the study!
