Toronto PPI Use and Hip Fracture Risk
GERD and hip fracture. We often write how everything in the body is linked. Here is another example. The discomfort for patients with reflux (aka GERD) drives them to seek help. Proton pump inhibitors (PPI) come to the rescue for many Toronto reflux sufferers. Unfortunately, these PPIs may cause issues elsewhere, especially the hip for which the risk of fracture is higher, despite the fact that they help with GERD. Your Toronto chiropractor watches closely our patients who report hip pain, particularly if they are taking PPIs, as many time chiropractic treatment helps alleviate hip pain.
PPIs, GERD, and HIP FRACTURE RISK
Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are commonly prescribed and used for GERD and peptic ulcer management. The risk of hip fracture is higher for PPI users. Whether users take a low or medium dose, the risk of hip fracture is greater while those on a high dose were at even higher risk for hip fracture. Researchers caution that doctors and patients must realize this in order to be cautious in prescribing PPI use long term and be cautious in knowing what the proper usage of PPIs is so that they do not take it without a clear indication for such use. (1) Researchers in the latest study of the effect of proton pump inhibitor use on hip fracture risk made it very clear: PPI use is associated with hip fracture development. They open their study by acknowledging that the effect of PPI use on the risk of hip fracture is controversial which inspired them to study if this were true. They found participants who were over age 40 and had been prescribed PPIs for a minimum of 90 days. They then cross referenced any hospitalizations in these patients for hip fracture. They found that fractures developed more often in PPI users than in non-users and that fracture risk associated with PPI use rose the more time they were on them. (2) Averting hip pain is certainly preferable, and chiropractic treatment may be gentle and relieving for many.
CHIROPRACTIC TREATMENT OF HIP PAIN
Chiropractic care of the hip and hip pain can be relieving for hip pain sufferers.
