Toronto Chiropractic Nutrition Tip: Enjoy Some Melon!

Melons Tasty and nutritious. Yorkville Chiropractic and Wellness Centre treats back pain and neck pain and all such spine-related pain and knows nutrition is important in healing and sustained health. Yorkville Chiropractic and Wellness Centre encourages healthy eating, and fruits provide superior nutrition benefits. Forward thinking researchers are even trying new ways to grow healthy melons enough to keep us all fed! Toronto chiropractic services clients will see this research is very intriguing!

BENEFITS OF MELONS

Every part of a melon - peels, seeds, and bioactive compounds – supplied health benefits in a new study. A specific melon from Honduras – the Galia variety – piqued researchers’ attention for its antioxidative, anticholesterol, antidiabetic, antibiotic (against pathogenic bacteria, protozoa, viruses), properties and thyroid function stimulation. (1) Agricultural researchers utilized gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis to study the phytocompounds of Honeydew melon (Cucumis melo L.) extracts. They found 37 compounds in whole fruit and 14 in seed extract. (2) Growing healthful melons adds to healthy humans!

A NEW MELON COMBINES BEST OF TWO MELONS

Something most of us do not consider is that cantalopes (“netted muskmelons”) are said to be susceptible to surface contamination. What did researchers do to try to tamp down this issue? They created a hybrid by crossing them with honeydew (“non-netted muskmelons”) to create an orange-fleshed honeydew melon fruit! This new fruit “Cucumis melo L.” is reported to be good sources of many human-healthy nutrients. The researchers studied and explained at length just where the nutrients are in each level of the fruit tissues! (3) Interesting what gets a person excited, isn’t it?

FUTURE OF MELONS’ NUTRITION

Another interesting side note discovered in doing research on the nutritional value of melons is about growing melons (specifically the “carosello leccese” version of Curcumis melo L.) in a soilless, greenhouse environment with LEDs as supplementary light. This process did not negatively affect the nutritional value. The bioactive compounds for human health were still there including methyl gallate (antioxidative and antiviral), α-tocopherol, and β-carotene. (4) Interesting what today’s investigators are trying as our world population grows to 9.9 billion by 2050 to keep us fed and healthy!
