Toronto Chiropractic Nutrition Plan for Osteoporosis & Osteoarthritis

Nutrition. Good nutrition is a good foundation for a healthy body. In our Toronto chiropractic practice, we consult with patients who have conditions like osteoporosis and osteoarthritis that develop over time. Their potential prevention and treatment are foundationally rooted in early-life nutrition habits that are maintained and/or improved upon throughout life. HEALTHY CELLS, CARTILAGE, & BONE PREVENT DISEASES LIKE OSTEOPOROSIS & OSTEOARTHRITIS

Optimal nutrition status guards the body and keeps it strong and healthy. Research has demonstrated the benefits of glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate in slowing osteoarthritis of the knee. Researchers now want to study how nutrients, vitamins, antioxidants and other natural components in a normal diet may help. (1) Optimal bone and cartilage metabolism heads off issues like osteoporosis and osteoarthritis. Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) regulates bone and cartilage metabolism at the cellular level – even into the nucleus of the cell – of osteoblasts and chondrocytes. (2) The metabolism of articular cartilage depends on chondroprotectors (CPs) that contribute to the regeneration of cartilage surfaces and joint capsules. In osteoarthritis and low back pain, loss of chondroitin sulfate and hyaline cartilage is seen. Some methods to alleviate this situation involved injections of CPs. (3) Other approaches involved oral supplementation as diet is not often a basis for these CPs. Oral supplementation is also a preferred way to improve vitamin D levels as low levels of vitamin D are known to contribute  to issues like osteoporosis, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, some cancer types, and overweight/obese status. Vitamin D is essential, but its natural sources like fatty fish and eggs are not usually part of most people’s daily diets. In Spain, at least half of the population is lacking vitamin D. Researchers recommended that Spain find a way to encourage people to eat eggs to reduce the vitamin D deficiency and protect against future diseases. (4) It’s particularly important for those who have a mix of issues - osteoporosis, vitamin D deficiency and high fracture/fall risk – to keep up their supplementation of vitamin D. (5) Feeding yourself goes so far beyond just feeding your stomach and satisfying your taste buds! The food you eat and the supplements you ingest keep your body performing, healthy and strong.
