Could a Plant Compound Assist Protect Your Intervertebral Discs?

July 29, 2026

If you've ever struggled with disc-related back or neck pain, you know how much your spinal discs matter to your daily well-being and mobility. Now, noteworthy new research is examining a natural substance called quercetin — found in foods like apples, onions, and berries — and its potential to delay disc degeneration at the cellular level.

WHAT IS QUERCETIN?

Quercetin is a natural plant compound known as a flavonoid. It's already recognized for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory characteristics, but two studies published in 2026 dug deeper into how it may directly support the health of your spinal discs.

WHAT THE RESEARCH FOUND

The first study, published in Tissue & Cell, found that quercetin preserves nucleus pulposus cells — the cushion-like cells at the center of each spinal disc that act as your body's natural cushions. (1) Researchers found that quercetin works by easing a specific inflammatory pathway and boosting a cellular "clean-up" process called mitochondrial autophagy. In everyday terms, this helps disc cells remove damaged material and operate better, which may help delay the degeneration process.

The second study, published in the Naunyn-Schmiedeberg's Archives of Pharmacology, took a distinct angle. (2) Using advanced genetic analysis, researchers determined that fibrosis — a kind of fibrous buildup — in nucleus pulposus cells plays a major part in disc degeneration. They found that quercetin demonstrates potential as an fibrosis-fighting agent, meaning it may help hinder this scarring process from advancing.

WHY THIS MATTERS TO OUR PATIENTS

While additional research is necessary before quercetin becomes a routine part of disc care, these findings contribute to a growing body of evidence that nutrition and natural compounds can play a supportive role alongside gentle, non-surgical spine care like chiropractic treatment. At Yorkville Chiropractic and Wellness Centre, we believe in a comprehensive approach to spinal health — blending hands-on chiropractic care with everyday life activities that support your body's own healing.
